Your local pharmacy will be able to provide you with advice and medication to help relieve the symptoms of common ailments.

Weekend and evening appointments

Northumbria Primary Care offers an out-of-hours service for our patients. This service is available 6.30pm – 8.00pm on weekdays and 9.00am – 5.00pm on Saturdays. The service rotates around different Northumbria Primary Care surgeries, so please confirm the location of your appointment with the reception team when you speak to them. Please note that this service will not be available on bank holidays.

If you are calling to book an appointment with the enhanced access service or have an enquiry about this service, please call the practice on the usual phone number during our regular hours. If your call is urgent, please call 111, or 999 in an emergency.

When the GP practice is closed

If you need medical help fast but it’s not an emergency, call 111. If it’s a life-threatening emergency, call 999.

NHS 111 is the number to call when you need medical help fast, but it’s not a life-threatening emergency. Calls to 111 are FREE from landlines and mobiles and is available 24/7, every day of the year.

When to call 111:

• You think you need to go to A&E, but it’s not a critical emergency
• Your GP surgery is close,d and you need healthcare advice
• You don’t know who to call for medical help

When to call 999:

• Major accident or trauma
• Severe breathlessness
• Severe bleeding
• Loss of consciousness
• Severe chest pain

Walk-in services

You can go to the following walk-in centres without an appointment for conditions such as cuts and grazes, coughs and colds, bites and stings, sprains and strains and other common illnesses.

Out-of-hours care

Hexham General Hospital has walk-in services from 8am to midnight for less serious injuries and conditions, including:

• Minor head, ear or eye problems
• Broken nose or nosebleed
• Sprains, strains, cuts and bites
• Children’s minor injuries and ailments
• Minor fractures or broken bones
• abscesses and wound infections

Emergency care for serious conditions is available at The Northumbria Specialist Emergency Hospital in Cramlington and the RVI in Newcastle.
